Hardscaping FAQ

Pavers last virtually forever, can be repaired in single pieces, never crack, and look more upscale. Concrete is cheaper upfront but will crack eventually and can't be repaired invisibly. For lasting value, pavers win — but concrete is great for budget patios.
95% of patio failures come from improper base prep. Crushed stone, compaction, and sand setting beds are what separate a patio that lasts 30 years from one that sinks and shifts in 5. We never skip steps.
A typical paver patio (300–500 sq ft) takes 5–10 working days. Larger or more complex projects with retaining walls take 2–4 weeks. Weather is a factor we plan for.
Most ground-level patios and walkways don't require permits in Wake County. Retaining walls over 4 feet, driveways connecting to public roads, and structures requiring excavation do. We handle all permitting as needed.

Paver Projects That Stay Put

With pavers, the base is everything — a beautiful surface over poor prep will sink and shift within a couple of seasons. Here's how to get it right.

Before You Begin

  • Drainage comes first — surfaces must slope about 1–2% away from your home and foundation.
  • Call 811 for utility locates before any digging — it's free and required.
  • Match the build to the use — patios, walkways, and driveways need different base depth and paver thickness.
  • A deep, well-compacted base is 90% of a lasting installation; don't let it be rushed.
  • Plan edges from the start — without edge restraints, pavers spread and shift over time.

Choosing Materials

  • Concrete pavers are versatile and budget-friendly; clay brick keeps its color longer.
  • Natural stone (bluestone, travertine) is premium and beautiful but costs more and varies in size.
  • Permeable pavers let water drain through — great for drainage-sensitive or large areas.
  • Polymeric jointing sand locks pavers together and resists weeds and washout.
  • Driveways need thicker pavers and a deeper base than patios — don't reuse patio specs.

What to Expect

  • Order: layout → excavate → compacted base → bedding sand → lay pavers → edge restraint → joint sand → compaction (and optional sealing).
  • A quality install is mostly invisible — what's under the pavers determines how they age.
  • Expect a few days to a couple weeks depending on size, drainage work, and pattern complexity.

Color & Palette

  • Blend two or three tones for a natural look; a single flat color can read flat on big areas.
  • Coordinate paver color with your home's brick, siding, and roof.
  • Lighter pavers stay cooler underfoot — worth it around pools and seating.
  • Herringbone is the strongest pattern for driveways; running-bond suits walkways and patios.

Avoid These Common Mistakes

  • Don't skimp on base prep or compaction — it's the #1 cause of sinking and heaving.
  • Don't omit edge restraints; without them the whole field creeps outward.
  • Don't ignore slope and drainage near the house — standing water and ice are the result.
  • Don't use patio-thickness pavers under vehicle loads.
  • Don't skip joint sand and sealing if you want to limit weeds and stains.
