Planning Your Kitchen, The Right Way

A little planning before demo day saves money, time, and regret. Here's what we wish every homeowner knew before starting a kitchen remodel.

Before You Begin

  • Set your budget early — cabinets alone are typically 30–40% of the total, so they drive the whole plan.
  • Keep a 10–15% contingency for surprises hidden behind walls — old wiring, plumbing, or water damage.
  • Moving the sink, gas line, or a load-bearing wall adds real cost; keeping the layout saves the most.
  • Plan a temporary kitchen — most remodels run 4–8 weeks without daily cooking access.
  • Confirm permits up front; electrical, plumbing, and structural changes nearly always require them in NC.

Designing the Layout

  • Protect the work triangle between sink, stove, and fridge — keep each leg roughly 4–9 feet.
  • Leave 42–48" of clearance around an island so two people can pass and doors fully open.
  • Build in landing space — at least 15" of counter beside the fridge and on both sides of the cooktop.
  • Plan more outlets than you think you need for small appliances and charging.
  • Choose a properly sized, vented-outside range hood — performance matters more than looks here.

Choosing Materials

  • Quartz counters are low-maintenance and stain-resistant; granite and butcher block need periodic sealing or oiling.
  • Judge cabinets by the box, not just the door — plywood boxes and soft-close hardware outlast particleboard.
  • Frameless ("full-access") cabinets give slightly more usable interior space than framed.
  • Pick water-tolerant flooring — porcelain tile or quality LVP handle a busy kitchen well.
  • Order one extra box of tile/flooring for future repairs from the same dye lot.

Color & Palette

  • Use the 60-30-10 rule: 60% main (cabinets/walls), 30% secondary (island/counter), 10% accent (hardware/decor).
  • Match undertones — warm whites with warm woods, cool grays with cooler stone; mismatches look "off."
  • Test large samples in your own kitchen and view them in morning and evening light.
  • Limit yourself to about three main finishes so the room feels collected, not busy.
  • Pair timeless cabinets with trendy, swappable accents (paint, hardware, decor) so it ages well.

Avoid These Common Mistakes

  • Don't choose appliances last — their sizes dictate cabinet and counter dimensions.
  • Don't rely on one ceiling light — layer task, ambient, and accent lighting.
  • Don't overlook storage: trash/recycling, pantry, and where small appliances will live.
  • Don't pick finishes from a screen — they read very differently in real light.
  • Don't start demo before every major selection is final; mid-project changes cost the most.
