Yes — virtually all decks over 30" off the ground or attached to your house require permits in Wake County. We handle all permitting for you, including HOA approval if needed.
Composite (TimberTech, Trex) lasts 25+ years with no staining, sanding, or sealing — best for busy families. Hardwood (cedar, ipe) is gorgeous and classic, but needs annual maintenance. Pressure-treated is the most affordable upfront. We help you weigh tradeoffs during consultation.
Most decks are built in 2–3 weeks once permits are issued. Screened porches and larger structures take 4–6 weeks. We give you a firm timeline before starting.
Yes — recessed riser lights, post-cap lights, under-rail lighting, and overhead string-light kits are all options. We handle all electrical work as part of the build.

Building a Deck That Lasts for Decades

A great deck is mostly about what you can't see — footings, framing, and flashing. Here's how to plan one that's safe, beautiful, and built to last.

Before You Begin

  • Check setbacks, easements, and HOA rules before designing — they can limit size and placement.
  • Most decks require a permit and inspections in NC; footings must reach frost depth.
  • Note sun and wind — a south- or west-facing deck bakes in summer; plan shade or it'll go unused.
  • Decide how you'll use it (dining, lounging, grilling) — that sets size, zones, and stair placement.
  • Budget for the extras — railings, stairs, and lighting often cost as much as the deck surface.

Choosing Materials

  • Pressure-treated pine is cheapest but needs regular sealing; cedar is prettier yet still high-maintenance.
  • Composite and PVC cost more upfront but resist rot, splinters, and fading with little upkeep.
  • Darker boards hide dirt but get noticeably hotter in direct sun — think bare feet in July.
  • Hidden fasteners and joist tape give a cleaner surface and help the framing last longer.
  • For railings, weigh wood (warm, more upkeep) against aluminum or cable (low-maintenance, better views).

  • Order: design/permit → footings → framing → decking → railings → stairs → finishing.
  • Proper footings and a flashed, bolted ledger board are what keep a deck safe for decades.
  • Weather can shift the schedule — concrete footings and staining both need dry conditions.

  • Coordinate deck tones with your siding, trim, and roof rather than matching exactly.
  • Multi-tone composite hides scuffs and wear better than a single flat color.
  • Lighter boards stay cooler and show less heat distortion in full sun.
  • Choose railing and accent colors that frame the view, not fight it.

  • Don't attach a deck without proper flashing — ledger failure is the leading cause of deck collapse.
  • Don't undersize footings or ignore frost depth — heaving and sinking follow.
  • Don't choose wood in full sun unless you'll commit to yearly sealing.
  • Don't forget drainage and airflow under the deck to prevent rot.
  • Don't skimp on lighting and stair safety if you'll use it after dark.
